These Poignant Surveillance State GIFs Remind Us That Orwell Wasn’t Too Far Off in ‘1984’

Over 32 years ago Ridley Scott-directed a “1984”-style Mac ad (in which athlete, model, and actress Anya Major smashes an Orwellian propaganda film with a giant hammer), which debuted during Super Bowl Halftime (see below).





Its overlying message, “1984 won’t be like [George Orwell’s dystopian novel] 1984,” is ironic in retrospect, considering the tech industry’s role in our current surveillance state.
