This 22-Year-Old Photographer With Sleep Paralysis Recreates His Nightmares In Photos

Nicolas Bruno is a 22-year-old photographer who has been suffering from sleep paralysis for over 7 years, but transmutes his terrors into art through photography.

According to Wikipedia:

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which an individual, either during falling asleep or awakening, briefly experiences an inability to move, speak, or react. It is a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep. It is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations to which one is unable to react due to paralysis, and physical experiences (such as strong current running through the upper body). These hallucinations often involve a person or supernatural creature suffocating or terrifying the individual, accompanied by a feeling of pressure on one’s chest and difficulty breathing. Another common hallucination type involves intruders (human or supernatural) entering one’s room or lurking outside one’s window, accompanied by a feeling of dread.

Whilst in this state, Bruno’s body becomes paralyzed, but his mind is wide awake – and filled with horrific nightmares/hallucinations. This condition has put him into a cycle of insomnia and depression.

“I thought I was possessed by demons…”

He was inspired to experiment with using photography to cope with his night terrors, when a high school teachers suggested he should document his visions.

“This project has gifted me a sense of who I am,” he said. “It gave me the strength to persevere in life, to create art and speak to people. It gifted me art, and I don’t know where I would be without it.”
